Description

Colour - Bright yellow green hue.

Aroma - Lifted Jasmine and pear drop leap from the glass. Earthy honeyed tones lie below the florals, intermingled with spice.

Palate - Honeyed and rich on the palate, in contrast with the apparent dryness of the wine. The hint of phenolic edge drives the palate length. A pure example of an ubiquitously enjoyed wine.

4 stars Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide

Bright, pale yellow-gold, even colour throughout. The nose is attractive with a soft and dusty sweet fragrance of ripe Nashi pear, yellow apple and lychees, adorned by intense white florals and five-spice. Medium-bodied, aromas of lychees, Nashi pear and yellow apples have an elegant core; delicate five-spice melded with white florals linger to a crunchy apple finish. The wine flows beautifully with subtle powdery phenolic on a smooth, almost unctuous texture. Lively acidity balanced by a hint of sugar sweetness broadened the palate. This is a fragrant Pinot Gris with succulent fruit of lychees, Nashi and apples with subtle spices and floral on an unctuous palate. Match with five-spice chicken and pork siu mai over the next 3 years. Fermented in tanks to 12.5% alc. RRP $26

Handpicked from the Martinborough Terraces and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel, fermentation was stopped leaving 5 grams residual sugar adding to the complexity and mouthfeel. A vegan and vegetarian friendly wine.
Sweet Nashi pear, red apple and white spice notes on the nose. A light bodied wine with a silky texture and a lovely ripe middle palate with pear and apple flavours melded with gingery spices. The splash of soft acidity enhances the white spice on the finish and makes you want to take another sip.

Elegant and restrained, the delicately fragrant bouquet shows apricot, Nashi pear, subtle spice and floral aromas, leading to a finely expressed palate displaying beautifully rounded mouthfeel and creamy texture. Well supported by juicy acidity, making it immediately appealing. At its best: now to 2024. $26.00. www.butterworthestate.com. Sept 2021.

Vineyard

TERRIOR - The soils of Te Muna Terraces are free-draining alluvial gravel, which are rich in minerals making it ideal for growing grapes. The climate is an extension of Martinborough and similar to Burgundy, being only slightly cooler due to higher altitude, but with long cool summers and low rainfall providing the optimum long ripening conditions for grapes.

VITICULTURE - This wine is sourced from the Martinborough Terraces, near the beating heart of the Martinborough township. The vines are tended by hand and are sustainably grown.

Vinification

WINEMAKING - The grapes were hand-harvested, then pressed and left to settle overnight. The juice was fermented cool, meaning long slow conversion of flavours. The ferment was stopped at 5g/L residual sugar to ensure mouthfeel, the racked off heavy lees to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine was stabilised and gently filtered for clarity.
